The cold hard truth about small business?

William Vickerman: And this forum is called Yahoo Answers!, not Yahoo Statements. What is your question?

Verdie Wollen: It's not the product or service. It's the exact opposite. Probably too many competitors online (which is the same for any product/service nowadays) and locally, it's due to the amount of capital needed to inform customers of the business. HUGE sums are needed to constantly advertise and raise awareness. I'm in a good location but that didn't seem to help much. I should have gotten a bad location and saved on rent.

Shaun Rapkowicz: That you say you are on Ebay says everything. 25,000,000 vendors all chasing the same dollar. 35 years in business for me - manufacturing, still going strong.

Morris Olexy: Welcome to the real world. Good Entrepreneurs RESEARCH their business before they start, they have a business plan, they check everything BEFORE getting involved. Those who don't end up finding out just how hard it is. Many start up a ! business without even knowing who their customers are - demographics, gender, age group, etc. --- or how to reach them effectively....Show more

Frederick Mccoach: 1. This is a rant.2. Sounds like you started the wrong type of business. You are correct that people only want to buy online from trusted sellers...which implies that you sell a product. 3. Perhaps a service would have made more sense for a business, since you cannot compete with online sellers of products.

Marcellus Exler: Did you ever think it may be your product or service?

Queenie Ruthers: Here's my question. Why do people lie and say go start a business knowing it's pretty much impossible to succeed without massive capital investments? I would have rather just purchased a new car cash than the money I probably just wasted.

Phillip Modafferi: Your experience is shared by most people who begin their own business. Typical statistics from 50 years ago were that 90% of small businesses wi! ll go under within 5 years. I suspect that figure will be wors! e now. You need to thoroughly research the market before investing the money and actually it's recommended you first do a course in business studies or something equivalent. Storefronts are not such a popular alternative now due to strong internet sales and as you say, having a successful internet business isn't so easy either. Fact is we are all competing with suppliers in countries like China and India now. Their employee pay rates are very low and they seem to be able to often provide free shipping via the postal service. We can't achieve that, so are at an immediate disadvantage.I think a service based industry or consultancy is now a better idea than direct sales....Show more

Giovanni Malool: lol you are behind the times on commerce my friend there is a gold mine right now you can get great product out there with amazing cheap it just takes intense investigating and EXPERIENCE.Its not easy it took me a good part of 5 years to finally have things click.ebay and a! ll that crap is WACK you are wholesaling while the big guys sell retail and real merchandise you need connections you need good people around you.Spending 50k wow you remind me of my brother who spent that on his website before the gold rush of easy commerce that is a total sick mistake losing that much.First you have to like what you are doing it can't just be some random get rich quick scheme in the long run it will fail....Show more

Pattie Vold: obviously you don't have a product that is in high demandyou have to make it seem so good people can't do without it to generate lots of sales

Toshia Metzker: sometimes people get lucky and they dont need a lot of money to be successful it depends what you are selling.

Shena Etulain: BBG, $10k 25 years ago was a lot of money, and that was a different time period. It's very hard for small business now because people prefer going to names they know and "trust" -- whether that's a big brand or the local business th! at has been around for 25 years (you).

Claude Gloden: All of you ! with these big successful MLM sounding claims to being so successful, please tell us what it is that you actually do.

Corrina Faro: Part of forming a business is the risk involved. If your business failed, then there are two likely probabilities:-You managed the funding poorly.-The product or service you were attempting to provide was not in demand and/or there were better deals in competition. If forming a small business is not working out, then you still have the opportunity to self-employ will less risk and less reward, or you can take no risk at all and work for an employer. Forming a small business with little capital is absolutely possible. However, it requires wise decision making and responsible spending. In the end, you cannot go around blaming the world when you do not succeed....Show more

Donte Liversedge: Hell no it is great to own your own business if you know what you are doing. I gross over $2mil and my next exceed 500k. Not everyone is a go! od business person

Donovan Stallons: TrueMost small businesses fail but if you are one of the lucky ones and have a success then the risk is well worth the reward

Mohamed Szollosi: A smart person doesn't pay 1 single cent to "get their site out there". If you don't have the intelligence to know how to get a business off the ground on the internet, neither do you have the intelligence to run a business of any sort. You've wasted your time and money to prove that you're an incompetent idiot and nothing more. Keep on working for uncle Sam, there's no other option for you.

Sylvie Snetting: Agreed.I own a restaurant and experience the exact same thing. Sales are booming but expenses eat every bit of profit. Now I've been out of the work force so long that I can't get a traditional job. I'm trapped and don't know what to do other than kill myself, which sounds better and better every day....Show more

Octavio Roylance: You make it sound like nobody will s! ucceed in small business because YOU haven't succeeded due to your own ! deficiencies. There are millions of successful small businesses, including mine, run by people who had a well-thought out and researched idea, a good sense of business, and the patience to stick it out. Your comments about the cost of web sites is misleading. If you know nothing about web site design, or any other aspect of your business, and must hire someone to do the work for you, it will be expensive. However, it's not hard to build a good web site yourself, with Wordpress, and the only cost is the cost of a hosting service, which can be as little as $9.95 a month....Show more

Elvin Mannheimer: Watch this video tutorial, you will find out what went wrong.

Saran Stealy: business is about selling stuff that others want to buythe cold hard truth is - you cant sell it if they dont want to buythere are a number of reasons why people buy1) Its cheaper than alternatives2) they can get it from you quicker than from other suppliers3) you are selling something only ! you are sellingif you are a business there are VERY few items on ebay that others aint selling - so out goes 3)since its very likely you are getting your stock from the same supplier they are then unless you can buy in huge quantities then the price you pay for stock will be the same as theirs - Even if it is cheaper the difference will be so small it will make zero different to you - so out goes 1) Since you are selling country wide(I assume) then you will most likely be using the same delivery people, so your shipping times wil be the same as theirs. So the only time saving you can do is on getting the goods ot the delivery company quickly, Problem is - they are doing the same thing.Resutl it- you are wasting your time trying to make money as a business on ebay - you may make a little to suppliment other incomes, but as only source of income its never gonna make you rich...Show more
